So I've been watching the goings-on of Scientology and their opposition for a while now. It's enjoyable because it's heartening. Here is an evil organization headed by an evil person that is failing, largely because of people speaking out against it. It's nice to watch a problem that is solvable, rather than deal with the seemingly-insurmountable, and more widely dangerous, problems in society. Like the Catholic church inserting itself into my ovaries, misogyny in every part of society, right-wingers being despicable, lack of universal health care in the U.S., etc.

But it's not like Scientology-watching is a safe space. Much of the rhetoric against Scientology is misogynistic, ableist, and homophobic. There are a lot of people who obviously get their kicks from kicking Scientology, because they can feel self-righteous while insulting people. Win-win! And they aren't likely to get called out on it, that would derail discussion... aren't we all here to fight the evil Scientology after all? Isn't ANYTHING that helps that goal okay?

Well, no. Of course it's not. Misogyny, ableism, and homophobia are bigger problems than Scientology. Scientology itself is deeply misogynistic, ableist, and homophobic. So what the fuck, people?

I usually don't say anything when people make horrible comments that are anti-Scientology. It would take all day, every day, to deal with this shit. I hate not saying anything, though. I try to say something once in a while... I don't know if it does any good. It's tiring.

The enemy of my enemy is also very often my enemy here, and I don't really know how to deal with that.
