JKR did not say Hermione should have been with Harry. She said that Hermione should not have ended up with Ron. That is all the quotes say.

STOP SAYING THIS MEANS JKR SAID HERMIONE SHOULD HAVE ENDED UP WITH HARRY, INTERNETS! Hermione was not Bella Swan. She did not have only two choices in life which were dictated by the boys she was closest to in high school.

Oh and btw needing relationship counseling does not mean you should not be with  someone, Ms. Rowling. If you actually said that, I am sorely disappointed in you. I like you as a person better than I like your books, but that quote is really very bad.

I had something like that today - I said that Harry wasn't any good for Hermione either, and there was some back and forth about how neither Ron nor Harry were suited for her.

Harry could be nastier to Hermione (and others) than Ron ever was. That's Harry's temper -- he loses it and he descends to horrible depths. Ginny can deal with it by telling him off or ignoring him; she's got a very thick skin. It hurts Hermione much more. Besides, Hermione and Harry's relationship is a thoroughgoing friendship with no romantic overtones, and that's what makes it so great.

Maybe Hermione should have ended up with someone she didn't know in high school, or Charlie, or no one, or Cho, but Harry's right out.

Yeah. Personal headcanon says Hermione took a job teaching Muggle Studies and Community Organization at Beauxbatons for a while, before returning to Hogwarts as Muggle Studies professor and head of Hufflepuff House until Minerva gives up Gryffindor (and the headmaster's seat) by dying, at which point Hermione becomes Gryffindor Head of House after a long career as one of the premier agitators for social change in the Wizarding World, or something like that.

Yeah, when the whole interview's out, I /hope/ it turns out that what she said was that she regrets cramming all three of her protagonists into lifelong couples at the age of fifteen, not that she wishes she'd crammed them into different couples (or two of them into a couple and the third into a grave, for that matter).

I think Hermione wasn't qualified to be in a relationship, but for different reason. Sharp-canary-beaks-to-the-face reasons.

I am relieved to hear that Ron/Hermione was a mistake, but not because I'd prefer either of them in a different ship - just because I'm against that specific ship.

(TBH, I think the more JKR expanded on any couple, the worse it got. Literally the only couple I really ship in-canon is Lucius/Narcissa. The rest is fanfic territory. She's NOT a romance writer.*)

Agreed massively. I have all the empathy for her since I am likewise terrible at exactly this as well, but it's nonetheless true. It's just not her strength.
