Thanks to a link from guardians_song , I ended up clicking through all sorts of bad translations (don't click if you don't want to be spoiled on FFX) and they all link to other stuff and I cannot seem to escape. 

Does anyone know for sure if English as she is spoke was really truly in "sober earnest"? I remember seeing conflicting reports, but I don't know if I'm confusing it with something else.

This edition of English As She Is Spoke claims it was written seriously, the result of a pair of Portuguese-French and French-English dictionaries and double translations. Not so different from the results of double-Google-translating today.

Now I want to find the French side of this. Someone commented that this guy's French was also bad.

To the best of my knowledge, "English as she is spoke" is tragically earnest.
