So, everyone who uses Disqus is being forced to use the "new" 2012 form of it. Which forces downvotes and threading on people. I hate both upvotes and downvotes -- downvotes are worse, but I find the whole concept inimical to discussion. (And really bad for people who are semi-addicted to praise. It's like waiting for those "A"s all over again.) I can deal with threading fine, but I know a lot of people can't. But there is something even more important than these things, which no one using Disqus has ever seemed to care about: IT IS BUGGY AS HELL.

Disqus has always been buggy as hell. I don't foresee it ever being anything but buggy as hell. The product does not bloody work. Why must people keep adopting something that doesn't work? Haven't we all been here long enough to demand that new shineys actually work before using them? Well, Geocities seems to be rising from the tomb on Tumblr, and various other websites and internet programs are doing that "cool", "clean" thing of hiding their tools that people figured out a long time ago does not work. Wake me up when we're no longer in 1997. Gah.

Oh and also for some reason Dsqus on Slacktivist is making me nauseous. It doesn't do this on, say, Tony Ortega's blog. Something in the settings, the font, I dunno. Well, I was going to try to stop reading the comments and commenting there anyway, I guess this makes it that much easier.

SO irritating, isn't it? I wish the world would figure out that it doesn't work and stop using it.

One of my friends switched to Disqus for her site and was all excited about it, and I felt really bad about saying, "but it doesn't work." She's incredibly computer-savvy, too, she set up my own website for me and everything, so I was shocked that she didn't know about how borked Disqus is. It does seem to work okay for her, but she normally gets about a dozen comments on her posts (which is a lot for the kind of website she has). The 2012 Disqus reliably breaks at 100+ comments. Plus, downvotes.

I've encountered a couple blips on Dreamwidth, but it's so easy to use and definitely has fewer bugs than any other blogging site I've tried. I like Wordpress for more complex things, but Dreamwidth is awesome.

Tell me about it. DW's interface and styles are cleaner than JF's and I'm pretty much gonna use DW for all my tv show and movie writeups.

Disqus makes me want to break something.

Poor JF. Back in the day it seemed like a decent platform, but now that I check it once a week or so it is impossible to look at.

I don't mind JF for commenting and making very occasional posts, but as a platform for making posts regularly or doing anything but short plain-text posts, it's too far behind. Way way way too far behind.

I remember way back when people first started moving off LJ to DW and there was a lot of enthusiasm for making donations to the admin to update the site. It was revealed that they did not give a shit about it and had no interest in fixing any of it (I mean, this is a site where it's nearly impossible to get a free account and even a paid one these days, or so I hear), so I've been kind of amazed that it's still even up.

No, I just skipped a bit. People were moving from LJ to DW, so IIRC a lot of us who'd been using JF for a long time wanted to move there instead. I definitely remember being (embarrassingly) enthusiastic about throwing money at ZR.

Yeah, I was reading the links to old wanks because of the March Madness thing, and I ended up at zorro's journal, and I went "eek". The whole idea was so cool, too. It's too bad they didn't take any of the many offers they got from people volunteering to help.

Yeah okay that seems kind of silly, if the admins are just going to not try to improve anything while yelling "THE SERVERS ARE ROBUST SHUT UP."

The main problem with JF is that they're using old LJ code and it looks like they're still pilfering off the actual LJ site for themes, because half the themes you can choose on JF don't even work properly.

I remember trying to get a paid account and their Paypal didn't even work right. Boooooo.

There's a new post today in which Robin (the other admin) says they're going to upgrade the hardware and software. http://www.journalfen.net/users/system/50074.html

I would love if Journalfen were as easy to use and with as many features as Dreamwidth, because I think the culture there's a little more my speed than on other journaling services. It would be great to be able to crosspost both here and there.
