CN: Anita Blake book
This chapter makes me ill.
It consists of people sitting around talking about how they will control the lives of people who are not there. To make it even more special, it's men sitting around talking about how they're going to control the sex lives of a woman and two teenagers. A man might have to kill his wife because her sexuality is oh so dangerous, and he might have to kill one of his sons too because said wife's dangerous sexuality might drive said son crazy if she rapes him, and of course the only thing you can do with a crazy person is kill them. To wrap it all up, this whole thing is to force Anita into possibly having sex that she didn't want to have, because if she doesn't do it a man will be forced – forced I tell you! – to murder his wife and probably one of his children too.
Samuel = husband. Thea = wife. Thomas and Christos (whose names are never mentioned, which is wonderful when you're talking about how they might possibly be raped by one parent and then murdered by another) = sons. Anita says it's Oedipal. Throwing that in there doesn't make your disgusting pro-rape novel deep, LKH. It makes me think you didn't understand the play in the slightest.
Other stuff: Asher is there. Two long paragraphs on his appearance and how he looks like an angel in a white frock coat with gold and copper thread and white silk pants that end at the knee and white hose and white high heels. I think he is not wearing a shirt. In the contest among LKH's characters to dress in the most ridiculous fashion possible, I think he is in the lead. Also Asher has some scars on his face which are supposed to provide angst I guess. Asher is happy happy happy about the rape power. Richard is upset about this.
The coffee table is gone and Anita thinks maybe they broke it during their rapey times, but can't remember. How could you possibly not remember having broken a large piece of furniture? Oh, right, you were seriously drugged. How sexy :/.
Samuel apologizes for his wife and says it was her fault that Anita got her rape on. Anita thinks:
Was this all someone else's fault? Was I going to have someone else to blame? Goody. (117)
DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE IN A FIRE OR BE CHOPPED UP INTO SMALL BITS I DO NOT CARE HOW YOU DIE JUST DIE YOU CAN DO IT WITH A FOX OR IN A BOX OR WITH A GOAT OR IN A BOAT I DO NOT CARE JUST DIE DIE NOW RIGHT NOW DIE
JC squeezes Anita's hand to signal her to be nice. She resolves, “I'd be nice. My version of it.”
We are supposed to like her. We are supposed to root for her. We are not supposed to think she is a 2-year old in a grown woman's body (or a vague semblance thereof).
Then they have the conversation about how super-dangerous another woman's sexuality is. There's some nonsense in there about how Richard is jealous. Because he still wants Anita all to himself. For some reason. I don't know why anyone would want Anita ever, full-time or otherwise, but there it is.
Samuel calls JC wise. JC = Gary Stu extraordinaire. Even more than Anita is a Mary Sue, imo. JC has gotten everything he ever wanted. Anita used to be someone different, but JC wanted her to change, and so LKH changed her. What is with female authors of vampire novels falling in love with one of their male vampire characters and doing everything the vampire wants, anyway?
Oh and it's also supposedly Thea's fault that Auggie tried to rape Anita. LKH, why do you hate women so much? Because it's down to that: LKH hates women. Seriously and severely. If you're a man, however, she thinks you are never at fault for any horrible thing you may do, ever, you poor little woobiepoo you. I think I prefer being hated.
Sampson (Samuel and Thea's oldest son) says that Thea came on to him, but when he said no, she accepted it and left him alone. Anita thinks this means Thea is worse than Belle Morte and JC. Um, no. Because Belle Morte and JC rape people all the time. Thea backed off when she was told no. Yes, it's disturbing that she came on to her son. It's not as disturbing in the text as LKH wants it to be, because this is right after Anita and JC raped a whole bunch of people at once. One of them almost died because of it. That is worse.
It's also not as disturbing as LKH wants it to be because she has Anita actually think, “EEK!” (124). The woman has no sense of tone at all.
Anita says she doesn't want to have sex with 17-year olds and Richard says, "but you'll fuck Sampson" (125). Anita demands an apology for this in the rudest way possible. Hell if I know why -- he's simply saying the truth. Maybe that's why. There is nothing more offensive to Anita Blake than speaking truthfully about sex and implying Anita could possibly consent to sex. Anita thinks Richard sleeps with every woman he dates, and that he dates a whole lot of women every month. Because LKH seems to have gotten her perception of unmarried, sexually active people from particularly bad romcoms.
(Richard is also bothered that Sampson is about as tall as Richard is. As LKH is really, really, really weird about height, and thinks everyone else is too.)
Anyway, Anita has to fuck one of Thea's sons to see if he's a siren or Thea will probably try to seduce one even though Samuel said he would kill her if she did, but of course you can't trust a woman to put her life above her cooch because we are all lust-crazed monsters of lustiness. Also no one has ever heard of divorce in this world. Richard is forced to accept Anita having sex with yet another man, because if he doesn't accept it Samuel will murder his wife and a son. Anita is forced to have sex with another man, because if she doesn't do it Samuel will murder his wife and a son. How Anita's vagina became responsible for the actions of other people, I do not know.
