Final Fantasy 12

Whee, new default icon. For a while.
My fiance -- okay, this is silly. I sound like I just got engaged, calling him "my fiance" all the time. This guy is my fiance. The name means "Justice" in Tolkein Elvish (yes, we were playing Dragon Age 2 when he came up with the name.)
Anyway, Beroli and I are playing Final Fantasy 12 together. I bought it when it came out, but have never finished it, because I kept getting sidetracked trying to hunt Marks who ended up being too powerful for me. By the time I tried to get back to the plot, I'd forgotten wtf I was supposed to be doing. I'm enjoying the game as a whole a lot more this time.
And I'm shipping Ashe/Balthier really hard. Don't tell me if it's canon or not, I don't want to know and I don't care. I have realized that the only time I really "ship" anyone is in JRPGs. In other media I like the canon romances or dislike them, but don't necessarily want to seek things out related to them outside the source. But I love Rosa and Cecil, Celes and Locke, Tifa and Cloud, Rinoa and Squall, Yuna and Tidus, and Ashe and Balthier, and would like to see and write these pairings. Since all of those except Ashe and Balthier are canon, I guess I'm a canon-shipper? Mostly?
I'm not really attached to the particular characters in any of those either, unlike I am to, say, Hermione or Anders or Leia. My favorite characters in the FF games are, respectively: Rydia, Celes, Tifa and Red (tied), Quistis, Auron, and Balthier and Penelo (tied). So my shipping doesn't seem related to my favorite characters, which -- is that unusual? It seems unusual to me, but the only shippers I know about are the batshit ones.
So I'm considering getting involved in fandom, for Final Fantasy games. This is only the second fandom I'd be involved in more than a little; the first was for Baldur's Gate 2, and that was/is mostly modding. There are fandoms I can't be involved with because I care too much about the source material and my reading of it (i.e. Dragon Age, Bujold, Austen), and I'd be wanky as hell. But while I enjoy Final Fantasy games a lot, they're more like Harry Potter and BG2 to me -- they don't speak to me on a really deep level, I'm not "attached" to them, so I think I can play in fandom and not regularly make a total fool of myself or become infuriated daily.
