I gave up on finding sulfate-free aloe-free shampoo and conditioner without tons of chemicals, so now I'm making my own from scratch.

Sort of. The shampoo uses castile soap. I got Dr. Bronner's lavender, since the grocery store didn't have unscented. (I love the labels on those.) Then we went to the organic market for essential oil and found out that castile soap is cheaper there and they have more sizes and varieties and they have unscented. I'm going to base the shampoo on this and the conditioner on this. I wasn't able to find flip top bottles or guar gum at the stores we went to, and xanthan gum is expensive. I'm going to order bottles and guar gum online and double the guar and skip the xantham in the conditioner and see how it works out.

I'm going to add some lemon essential oil to the shampoo and use rosemary oil instead of rosemary water, and see how that works with the lavender in the soap I've got. For the conditioner, I'm using jojoba oil because I love it, and also lemon with the rosemary. When I'm out of lavender-scented soap, I plan to experiment with other essential oils like jasmine. If this works, that is.

Until I have bottles and all the ingredients I need, I'm going to try the baking soda and apple cider vinegar method of hair washing and conditioning. It sounds so strange, but I found it recommended all over the place last night when I was looking for shampoo and conditioner recipes. I also found out a whole lot about how bad sulfates and all sorts of other stuff in soap is for the environment, so I'm going to try to make my own body wash when I'm out of what I've got. I think just mixing castile soap with distilled water and adding whatever essential oil I feel like should work well.

The initial expenditure for the essential oils is somewhat high, but over time this should save a lot of money, since castile soap goes such a long way. Anyway, I hope it works, because I think it's going to be fun. If it does, I know what I'm giving people for Christmas this year.
