It reeks of "Bella has value as a person because men want her". And except possibly for Jacob, they want her for things she can't control: her unreadable mind for Edward and her novelty as the new student for the other boys. I believe in some extracanonical material Meyer released, she says that Bella's adult biology teacher also has an inappropriate thing for her. I don't think Bella is victim-blamed for much of her human followers' creepiness, but I feel like the writer believes that female value depends on male attention, and that's foul.

And that sentence is ridiculous. Thank you for pointing it out!
