I think pretty much everything in Twilight comes back to Bad Writing. Even bad writers can usually show their intentions on the page. Meyer is so terribly incompetent that I have no idea what her intentions were, and many of the intentions she says she had didn't work out in the text at all. All I know for sure is that Edward is pretty.
