guardians_song: Part of Fire Emblem 7's Chapter 19xx CG, colored (Nergal and children)
"This throwaway line makes me wonder, though. "
No, she's a straightforward badass who's of course the best ever at lying when the plot 'requires' her to do so, i.e. when she feels like it.

"Haven smells warm. Does Anita have synesthesia? "
The metaphors in these books all have synesthesia. I can't remember whether you've gotten to the infamous everyone-is-a-flavor-of-ice-cream scene yet, but... yeah.

And in the later books, Anita uses her beasts as an excuse to go on acid trips about scents = all-expenses-paid round-trips to the savannas, touches = technicolor porn visions, etc. You get the feeling that LKH is a very visual person* and in denial about it.

*A visual person with severe tunnel vision and a horrible memory. Hence why everyone is a cloud of hair, eyes, and horribly tacky 'clothes', and why the appearances keep changing.

"I don't understand why Anita is a vampire here. "
Because it's ~edgy~. She does the same thing in Affliction.

"Nathaniel smells like vanilla, as he is a wereorchid."
BWAHAHAHAHA! Best line of this post, easily. :)

"But we're supposed to think Anita's a good person, the best person in fact. And yet, part of me wonders – are we?"
I think we are, but LKH's conscience won't stop nagging at her. LKH constantly has to have Anita reassured that she's the bestest ever, even as she also has Anita assuring the readers that she's a flawless sociopath and not troubled by these things at all. An interesting study in narcissism and insecurity, I suppose, if one can endure the prose and (lack of) plot... :\

"Something else I don't understand: why can vampires control weres so easily? Why can they control weres at all? "
Apparently wereanimals have the Animal racial trait for purposes of the Charm Animal spell, which Anitaverse vampires get to spam infinity-times-a-day. The only limitation is that each vampire can only control animals of a specific type determined at random, one per vampire; taking the Padma-line subclass might allow the removal of that limitation, but I don't know if that's only him or not.

"Why would they lose the city if Auggie could knock Anita over with this metaphysical mumbo jumbo? Or even if he could knock over JC? Leadership is not decided through fistfights, so why should it be decided through metaphysical whatsits?'
This is a fairly consistent element of the universe, though. I didn't read most of the early books, but I think leadership was decided by mine-is-bigger-than-yours fights even back in Circus of the Damned.

"It's like Dragonball Z. Anita's gone Super Saiyan and her enemies are staring at her in awe but no fighting is actually happening."
In all fairness, the manga had less padding. I think the anime had more padding because they sometimes had to wait for Toriyama to catch up.

Onto the Anitaverse's first attempt at mediocre m/m porn! *toasts and tosses vodka*
