lliira: (Passion)
As I woke up this morning, I was having a dream in which Demetrius wanted to marry Helena but his father told him he had to marry Hermia because Hermia was rich and Helena wasn't. And so Demetrius decided to tell Helena he didn't love her to try to make it easier on her. Plus Lysander had a bad reputation for being a party boy, so Demetrius felt he had to save Hermia from him. AND ALSO Demetrius never got dosed with the rapey fairy drug; he freaked out and could no longer pretend he didn't love Helena when he saw Lysander start putting the moves on her.

I haven't read the play in a while, and I don't think this fits entirely with canon. Plus it doesn't explain Demetrius insulting Hermia. I still like it. I've always felt Demetrius had basically no character to speak of besides "jerk for no apparent reason", and that this was the weakest part of the play. (Not most disturbing, but weakest.) Making Demetrius into someone who believes in following his duty no matter what gives him an actual character, and gives him character growth when he goes against that.

By the time I am through with this section, I will have read 50 straight pages of bickering. That's ten times as much bickering as sex in this book so far, and that's only counting this section, not the bullying of Ronnie or the strange arguments with Auggie and Thea. Plus it's entirely centered on how Richard is unhappy with Anita's sex life and how terrible he is for that. It is not only poor writing; like “Shutdown”, it's also embarrassing.
