Xenoblade: I am having a really hard time paying attention

I am about 15 minutes into this game so far and I don't really know what's going on, and I don't know how much of that is to be expected and how much of it is the voice acting. The main character is voiced by the same guy who voices Anders in Dragon Age 2. I adore Anders. I am completely distracted. And praying the main character is supposed to be at least 17 or 18, and not 15 or so like he looks. But mostly I feel like I'm controlling Anders on a holodeck or something.
