I had a dream about an Anita Blake book last night
... and it was actually good.
In the dream book, the chief of police, who had been a good friend and mentor to Anita through many books, was murdered. This character does not actually exist, but I think he was an expy of Zebrowski (sp?). The second-in-command who "inherited" his role -- which I think is not how it actually works -- was Richard-as-a-cop. Anita had a strained on-again/off-again thing with Richard, a realistic and not hugely obnoxious relationship where you knew they would eventually end up together but meanwhile were each other's best friends and irritated each other constantly.
Also, Richard's skin was an olive brown, not the "tan-but-still-white" that it is in the books, he was in his mid-30s but looked older due to worrying all the time, and he had SHORT black hair. Anita herself was still short (actually short, not average) with pale pink skin and black hair, and she was muscular, but her breasts were within the realm of possibility and she did not have an itty-bitty waist and was pretty rather than the most beautiful woman in the world and looked like a normal person.
Anita watched Jean-Claude and Micah marry a tall thin blonde woman who was a werelion (they married the same one), and didn't feel jealous at all. She was impatient to get away from the wedding so she could investigate the murder, and otherwise felt relieved that she wouldn't have to deal with either of the dudes on a sexual level ever again. She was still friends with Nathaniel, but I think they'd ended their sexual relationship. Nathaniel was in college. And his hair went past his shoulders, but not to his ankles. Asher was around. Both Nathaniel and Asher were suspects in the murder, but I don't think either of them turned out to be guilty.
There were zero sex scenes. Even more unusual, nothing about the crime was sexualized in any way. It was a murder to further the goals of someone in organized crime, period. (Which makes me think maybe Jean-Claude did it; I wish I could remember.) The only "sexual" part of the book was the sexual tension between Anita and Richard, and it was very much secondary to solving the murder.
Everyone on Lashouts was THRILLED. Someone Anita was close to died! All violence was no longer sexually-related! A real mystery plot! No sex scenes! THE ARDEUR WAS DEAD!
I have a bad feeling that if LKH actually did something like this, though, her sales would plummet.
