Shutdown, part I: WTF am I reading

CN: Anita Blake story, spite, jealousy, wtfery

I know, the title of this post is overused. But sometimes it is entirely appropriate. I think the only way to properly respond to this story may be with cat macros. Anyway, the reason I'm reading this plate of shit is that Richard says something in it that many critics of LKH, including myself, have often said about her portrayal of BDSM. And it's niggling at me; I really want to know first-hand what's going on here.
LKH is very very very jealous )

Danse Macabre, Chapter 8, aka These People Never Shut Up

I am finally mostly recovered from surgery, so back to Danse Macabre. Um... yay?

CN: Anita Blake book

I was wrong about Chapter 8 being a sex scene. It's a foreplay scene, Anita Blake style. That means violence, angst, and yammering.

LKH's Dancing

So I got LKH's Dancing because I am curious and also do not know what is good for me. What follows is my sort-of sporking of it, necessary to get myself through the thing:

Danse Macabre, Chapter 7, Part 2

CN: Anita Blake book, treating people like food

Picking up where we left off on page 62, Anita is telling Auggie that if he wants a woman of Belle's* line, he'll have to court them, as JC isn't going to make anyone have sex against their will. This no-rape policy will last for about eight pages.

Danse Macabre, Chapter 7, part 1

CN: Anita Blake book

Chapter 7 opens with Anita kissing Thea. She says Thea feeds at her mouth and talks about tasting her. It's like two milkshakes making out. I do not find this appealing. At least Thea tastes salty this time.

Danse Macabre, Chapter Six

CN: Anita Blake book, pregnancy

So someone whom I think (hope) must not have actually read the Anita Blake books decided to defend them: http://lkh-lashouts.livejournal.com/592503.html. I love the accusation of prudishness especially. It amuses me. Now, I consider "prude" to be one of the worst insults there is because I think it's one of the worst things to be, but the accusation is so incredibly wrong, it gives me the giggles.

Danse Macabre does too, though for different reasons. As offensive as LKH's books are, the goofily terrible and terribly goofy way they're written is almost a saving grace. It makes me sometimes suspect LKH is trolling us all. Consider the first paragraph of Chapter 6, during which Thea is forcing a kiss on Anita:

This chapter was really difficult )

Danse Macabre, Chapter Three

CN: Anita Blake book, long descriptions of clothing, hypocrisy, harem

Chapter 3 starts at the "Circus of the Damned" (yes really), the strip club Jean-Claude owns where his party will be taking place. We learn, in depth, that Nathaniel helped Anita with her eyeshadow.  We also learn Anita's carrying a gun and a knife, and wearing a black top and skirt. She's afraid someone is going to try something with her tonight because she's "the Executioner".

Danse Macabre, Chapter 2

CN: Anita Blake book, pregnancy, bullying

The intelligent, brave, and beautiful Ronnie, who is my best friend ever, has just revealed to two of Anita's boytoys that Anita might be pregnant. Normally I would of course not condone revealing that someone else might be pregnant. But Anita has been treating Ronnie in such an appalling manner, and generally being such a jerk, I'm thrilled with it. Now, on to chapter 2.

It's like good writing, if it weren't bad writing )

Anita Blake Books Background

CN:  Rape, rape the author pretends is not rape, paranormal romance, werewolves, vampires, violence

Laurell K. Hamilton published the first Anita Blake book, Guilty Pleasures, in 1993. Anita Blake started out as a vampire hunter, necromancer, and zombie-raiser living in St. Louis, Missouri. She had an antagonistic/mutually beneficial relationship with a powerful vampire, Jean-Claude. Soon, she obtained a werewolf boyfriend, Richard. Anita solved mysteries (sort of) and killed things in bloody ways. All in all, a somewhat typical paranormal noirish series with some interesting twists, like the fact that the world had always known about vampires, werewolves, and magic. Fans enjoyed LKH's world, and the series sold pretty well.

And then she got really popular )
