The differences between how MoaD and Akasha are handled are interesting.
Rice has Akasha irresistibly fascinated with her boring and whiny Stu... because that's of course what any woman would do faced with Lestat, amirite? LKH has MoaD violently opposed to her boring and whiny Sue... because that's of course what any woman would do faced with Anita, amirite?
Okay, okay, more seriously. Now for the actual criticisms of LKH's handling of the idea...
Rice has Akasha run around actually killing people (for some bizarre pseudo-feminist agenda, yes, but still killing people). LKH has MoaD harassing Anita with nightmares and bad perfume.
Rice gives Akasha a backstory to explain why she's the way she is. LKH gives MoaD a dark skin tone.
Rice has her characters explain why Akasha is wrong. LKH has Anita explain that she likes sex.
Rice has Akasha's death actually be important. LKH waves it off with 'Anita sucked her down'. The one time Anita consensually does anything oral with a woman...
Rice explains WHY Akasha was so important, and WHY all vampires would die with her (if not for a certain intervention). LKH... :\
Rice explains HOW Akasha became the originator of all vampires. Something something metaphysics.
Rice is far from perfect, but LKH's work looks all the worse in contrast.
